Greetings!

What do you think of when you think of your mother? What are some of your best or most vivid memories & experiences with your mom?

When I think of my 62 year old, 115 lb. Mom, I think of a saint. Mom raised me and my brother and is one of the most loving, compassionate, and sweetest people I know. Some of my most vivid memories of Mom include:

>  Every week, her cutting out coupons at the kitchen table in order to make my father's pay check stretch that much further;

>  Typing out school reports the night before they were due because my brother and I failed to plan accordingly;

>  Her planting vegetable gardens at every family home we had growing up in order to prepare fresh meals for a faction of the store's price;

>  Mom making/sewing dresses for me as a kid so that I could have something new to wear for church on Sunday morning (along with the curled hair);

>  Being my cheerleader at all of my softball, volleyball, track and cheerleading events.

>  Time!!! Out of everything, time is the one thing Mom always gave me. While we never had a lot of money, we did have more love than any kid could ever ask for. Thanks Mom!

As you enjoy your Mother's Day, I hope you have such fond memories of your mother's also. Whether you have a chance to spend it with your Mom, your grandmother, your significant other, or you revel in just great memories, I hope this special weekend is full of relaxation, fun, and tons of love.

Happy Mother's Day!

Choose Change Before It Chooses You

As many as you know, my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer this past Christmas Eve.  It has been a roller coaster of a ride for the whole family.  She underwent surgery to remove the mass which then followed with chemotherapy and intense radiation treatments.  The doctors indicated that the surgery and treatments were successful and she seemed to be in the clear, however, this past week things have changed a bit.  She has become weaken and has even fallen a few times during the day.  Under her doctor's advise, a second MRI was scheduled to see if swelling has occurred on her brain once again.  The results are pending at this time.

What's shaking up your life right now? Are you built to withstand sickness? Sudden change comes in many forms... from diseases, loss of a job, loss of the family home, to injuries... to anything. Oddly, the recovery process after such a set back is a lot like the recovery process after a physical injury or an accident - everything depends on the strength of your infrastructure. Just like a building, when our physical (and mental) "infrastructure" is strong before injury, we recover faster and experience less damage.

My team and I work daily with all types clients. From post-injury to post-surgery; from post-pregnancy to the obese.  At Team Fit, we specialize in personal training, fitness and nutrition. But what if the injury is emotionally devastating, like divorce or financial worry? The tools we use and the services we provide help clients prepare for, cope with and recover from change of all kinds - emotional and physical. Central to our philosophy is the belief that we can be better prepared for change by strengthening the infrastructure of the mind and the body.

Heraclitus, an ancient Greek philosopher, wrote some pretty wise words: You cannot twice step into the same river. Think about it... Change occurs everywhere, everyday for everyone. Life does get shaken up. Whether you experience change in your health, fitness, relationships, family life, finances, career, spiritual life, or mindset; when it occurs, your ability to adapt and to thrive is a direct result of life-long preparation - physical and mental readiness. Now is the time to get in shape for life. Choose change before it chooses you.

First, recognize that change comes in different forms. We know it can be sudden, and other than winning the lottery, sudden change is often the most frightening. But, it can also be evolutionary - with each decade of life, we adapt to our changing bodies. And, it can be revolutionary - we seek change through weight loss, improved fitness and nutrition, etc. There is so much about change that is good. As a trainer, fitness instructor and life coach to aspiring souls everyday, I get to witness positive change all the time. It's revitalizing, rejuvenating and inspiring.

 What can you do?

Open your eyes, your heart, your body and your mind to change, and embrace it. Own the changes in your 30-year old body (or 40 or 50 or 60 or beyond). Eat and train smarter to achieve the results you desire. Ask your family how you can be a better mother, father, husband, wife, brother, sister, son or daughter. Listen to them, and invest time now for your future together. Stop and take an accounting of the changes in your finances, business or career. Don't like what you see? Make change. Find help. Seek expert advice. Struggling with a negative outlook? Spiritually uninspired? Look around you. Who's feeding you a diet of negativity? Seek a positive environment. Censor your own thoughts. Read to learn, to grow and to improve. It's time to update your physical and mental playbook.

We're all human and to counter our natural tendency to resist the unknown, we were built to seek our potential. Unlock the gate that's holding you back. Stop choosing the safe and familiar over something new and possibly better. Take a risk. Don't wait for change to choose you. Experiment with it. You'll be stronger, wiser and infinitely better prepared for life!

Beach Body Ready!  Easy as 1....2....3

Step 1: Diet
It all begins with eating right. Statistics clearly show that diet accounts for 70-80% of what our body looks and feels like.  Eat 5-6 balanced meals per day and NEVER skip breakfast. Breakfast is what starts up your metabolism and increases energy levels making you less likely to overeat during the day. An astounding 80 percent of people over eat! This can be remedied by learning such things as how to cut out empty calories. Another tip to reduce overeating is to determine your customized Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and make sure your total daily calorie consumption doesn't exceed that. If you are training more than normal you might need adjust your BMR. The key is to pay attention to your body's needs.
Step 2: Attitude
Attitude is everything! You have to want that beach body. Start by picturing yourself lying on the beach... what do you look like? The point is to visualize yourself on the beach looking like whatever it is that motivates you most to stay on track. Don't lose focus! Assert to yourself that you are valuable and determined to have the body you dream of and deserve. Saying these affirmations will motivate you to eat right & workout when nothing else will.
Step 3: Exercise
No beach body is complete without a proper workout regimen. The beach bodies we desire are not simply skinny, they are also toned. And getting that tone beach body you desire comes from training. To achieve and maintain your beach body, you should be doing cardio everyday, taking one day off to do something different like hiking or yoga, if necessary.  Also, engage in the use of weights (strength training) three to four times a week. Concentrate mostly on circuit and core training with your own body weight.
Let nothing come between you and your goal!

COOKING CORNER

Seafood Skewers
Makes 4 skewers
½ pound large peeled and cleaned shrimp (16)
½ pound large scallops (about 8)
1 large red pepper, sliced into 8 pieces
1 large yellow pepper, sliced into 4 pieces
seasoning mix (McCormick & Schmidt mixed with fennel seeds)

Place peeled & cleaned shrimp and scallops in a medium bowl, season with Steak & Chop seasoning.  Place 1 red pepper, 2 shrimp, 1 scallop, 1 yellow pepper, 2 shrimp, 1 scallop, and 1 red pepper on each skewer,  makes 4 large skewers.  Grill on medium heat turning 2-4 times for about 5-8 minutes, do not overcook.

Serve with Serrano Mint sauce.

Serrano Mint Sauce
1 cup fresh mint, chopped
¼ cup fresh Italian parsley, chopped
1 Serrano chili, seeded and de-veined, chopped (very spicy)
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 inch of fresh ginger, peeled and chopped
2 teaspoons of honey
2 tablespoons lite Tamari (organic soy sauce)

Mix above ingredients in a small bowl until well combined.

I love this dish, it is simple and refreshing.  I like to serve it with mango rice (brown rice mixed with fresh chopped mango and fresh herbs).

Team Fit Answers Your Fitness Question

Question:
 What can I do to lose weight in my stomach? I've been doing lots of crunches but they don't seem to help.

TF Answer:
There is no way to target weight loss to a specific area of the body because your body decides where it wants to put on weight and where it wants to take it off. The midsection is a common "problem" area for many people. The best way to lose fat is through cardiovascular exercise. It is important to do a variety of abdominal exercises (including crunches) to keep your core strong, but until that excess fat is gone, you will not see the muscle definition. So if you're not doing cardio, crunches are not going to help get the 6-pack you've been hoping for. Regular cardio exercise at a level that's challenging for you is your best bet.

Motivational Quote

Finding and celebrating the joy in life

We should consider every day lost in which we have not danced at least once.
- Nietzsche, philosopher

Each day is a new chance to find joy and to dance. If you let it pass or think it useless, the chance is gone and you'll never get it back. When was the last time you played? Or just did something for the sheer fun of it? Joy is not found in the world around you, it's within yourself. You can make your own joy, especially during those dark times when you need to really feel alive again. Fun and play are healthy antidotes to taking life--and ourselves--too seriously. They're proven boosters of immune systems and mental health and make life worth the trouble. So do the twist. Sing in the shower. Learn a magic trick. Watch a cartoon. Challenge some kids to a game. Don't let a single day go to waste.
