UNDERARMOUR.
Greetings!

I love the Fall. It is an awe time of the year; leaves turning bright orange, red and yellow tones, the air is crisp and clean, the smell of wood burning in the fireplace and weekend trips to the orchards.   Life is good.

Since Halloween does fall on a Friday this year, we will not have to make special arrangements for make up classes.  However, let us review the schedule for Thanksgiving.  There will be no classes hosted on November 27 and 28. Makeup classes will therefore be scheduled at the end of the session.  Please check with your instructor(s) as to when the make-up will take place.

As we all try to prepare for snow to makes its debut in Michigan, below are our procedures regarding class cancellations due to snow days.  If L'Anse Creuse School District closes school for the day due to weather, our morning classes hosted at Xtreme Fitness and ConCorde Club will therefore be canceled and a make-up class will be scheduled at the end of the 6-week session.  This is one of the reasons why we have a week break in between each session period.   Our evening classes will not follow this same routine. If the roads are clear and snow subsides, evening classes will go on as scheduled.  This is why it is very important to make sure your instructor has your current contact information on file.  A mass email will be sent to out indicating changes in our schedule.  A phone call will only be giving if an email address is not on file.  Classes hosted on school campus (at any time of the day) will be canceled.  Classes hosted on Saturdays will be reviewed the night before and contact will be made to each student if the class will be canceled.  You are always welcome to call in and a prompt will highlight the class cancelations for that day.

Our spotlight article to the right highlights the New Year; New U Program.  This 6:00 am class will get you off right with your New Years Resolutions.  Sessions take place three times a week (m,w,f) for one hour and begins on January 5, 2009.  We will strengthen and tone every square inch of your body along with cardiovascular and flexibility segments.  Diet and supplements will also be discussed to further your weight lose and maximize your results.  Check it out!

Below is the new time for the pm Slide and Glide Booty Camp.  Be sure to mark your calendars for this one!  It fills up quickly!

Our supplement of the month is Immune Guard.  We have spotlighted this all-natural supplement at the end of the newsletter as well as our promotional price for the month of October.

CALORIE CONSCIOUSNESS
the truth behind diet soda

Last month, I wrote about low carb vs. no carb diets.  This month's topic is the sugar sabotage diet.  There is no joke behind the phrase, "sugar is the devil".  If not controlled under the daily acceptance intake, it can have huge effects on your appetite, weight loss, fat storage and stability.

Americans drink about 14 billion gallons of soda each year, that's 54 gallons for every man, woman and child.  This liquid candy is bad for your bones, weight and blood sugar.  One problem with sodas and candy is that once we start indulging our cravings for those sweets, the cravings get worse and worse and we may eat more and more of the sugary foods which would displace all the healthy foods we really need.

Don't be fool that diet soda is any better for you.  Researchers found that those who drank one or more diet sodas a day were twice as likely to develop metabolic syndrome, a series of risk factors that affect heart health, like high blood pressure and fat accumulating around the waist. One theory was that the artificial sweetener tricked the body into thinking it was sugar and sugar-related cravings ensued. The study's results appeared in the American Heart Association's publication, Circulation.

Further studies from www.lifescript.com suggest that artificial sweeteners interfere with the body's ability to know when it's had enough, based in part on a food's sweetness. Substituting a diet drink for a naturally sweet drink may trick the body into believing that other sweet foods have few calories as well. Or drinking a diet drink may lead one to believe that "making up" the saved calories with some real-sugar indulgences (like cake or cookies) is okay. Instead, reach for a bottle of water with a squeeze of lemon or try one of those flavored sports water sweetened with sucralose (commonly known as Spenda) which is made from a form of sugar. They're about 10 calories a bottle and taste great.

TF READER QUESTION OF THE MONTH:

Q:  My high school athlete is trying to gain weight for sports, but doesn't have any luck.  Should they start taking protein shakes and other "supplements"?

A:  The answer to that question depends on what they are currently doing.  Nutrition is  going to be the first and most important factor in weight gain.  Weight training will compliment a great nutrition plan in regards to gaining weight, and will increase the athlete's strength and performance.

Nutrition
To gain muscle and weight, young athletes need to increase the number of quality calories they eat each day.  I don't mean by adding a low-fat protein shake to their diet.  I mean, upping their daily caloric intake by about 1000 calories!  The "bowl of cereal for breakfast, sandwich for lunch, processed crap for a snack, and dinner" model will not end in quality weight gain.  Young athletes should try to eat a minimum of 4 times per day, taking in around 600-700 calories per meal if they want to gain weight.   If they are not gaining weight, they are not eating enough. Sometimes, supplement shakes are nutritionally dense and they taste good.

Here are some nutritionally and calorically dense foods that will help them achieve their goals:
-Whole eggs and egg whites
-2% milk (more calories and protein, fat OK if they are active)
-Oatmeal (not instant), and Oat Bran
-Brown rice, wild rice
-"Meat off of the bone"  (Red and white meat off the bone)
-Whole wheat bread and pasta
-Peanuts and Peanut butter (put it on everything)
-Potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams

If they don't like these foods, just double and triple up on what they do like!  If they don't like eating that much, they won't gain weight!

Weight Training
Weight training aids in creating additional muscle tissue in the body.  Muscle weighs more than fat.  Aside from aiding in the gaining of quality weight, weight training helps an athlete get stronger and faster.  Consider the following in regards to weight training and weight gain:

-Increasing caloric intake is still the most significant way to gain weight.
-Train at least 3 days per week, no more than 5, for at least 10 consecutive weeks.
-Train all major muscle groups, not just "vanity muscles" (chest, shoulders, arms).  Large muscle groups like the legs and back have larger muscles involved, so training these groups aids in increasing body weight.
-Always get stronger, lift more weight (keeping correct technique in mind).

If you have a question for me, please submit 2 weeks prior to next circular and I will be happy to answer it!
